Detroit is starting Tuesday under a real storm threat, with a high near 85°F and a 90% chance of showers and thunderstorms — grab a compact travel umbrella before you step outside.
Today’s Setup
Rain is already pushing east across southwest Lower Michigan this morning, and the National Weather Service expects it to reach the Detroit metro by around 9–10 AM ET. The storms arrive in waves with breaks in between, but the biggest threat builds this afternoon during peak heating and lingers into the evening. South winds of 8–13 mph with gusts up to 22 mph will accompany the activity. The Weather Prediction Center has flagged the Ohio Valley — including southeast Michigan — for a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall. Locally heavy downpours are possible, and low-lying spots near the riverfront and Belle Isle could see standing water.
Rain & Wind Risk
This isn’t an all-day soaker, but don’t let the dry spells fool you. The National Weather Service warns of locally heavy rainfall and isolated damaging wind gusts, especially this afternoon through the early evening. Storms should taper off after midnight ET. If you’re heading downtown, keep a weather app open on your phone.
What To Wear Or Bring
A packable rain jacket is the call today — stash it in your bag and you’ll be glad it’s there. Waterproof hiking boots will keep you comfortable if you’re spending time on your feet outdoors, and a compact travel umbrella handles the dashes between buildings. Check out outdoor gear deals if you need to stock up.
Detroit Tigers fans: The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park tonight (June 9), with the series continuing June 10 and 11. With storms possible through the evening, expect a potential rain delay — check for updates before heading downtown. Rep the Motor City in a Detroit Tigers jersey or Detroit Tigers fitted cap, and if you need last-minute seats, Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub.
Mt. Joy at Freedom Hill tonight: Mt. Joy plays Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill on June 9 for their 10-year anniversary show. It’s an outdoor venue, and the evening storm window is real — check for venue updates before you go.
Rainy Day Dinner
Rainy evenings were made for slow cooker nights. Load up a programmable slow cooker with chili or beef stew ingredients before you leave and come home to a hot meal. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works beautifully for a stovetop pot of soup, too. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.
Next Few Days
Wednesday heats up fast — high near 93°F with a heat index potentially reaching 101°F. The National Weather Service says a Heat Advisory may eventually be needed for southeast Michigan. A slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms exists around 2–4 PM ET, but Wednesday is mostly sunny and sweltering. The Tigers-Twins series rolls on, and it’ll be a hot one at Comerica Park.
Thursday is the bigger concern: the National Weather Service has a Slight Risk of severe thunderstorms in place for all of southeast Michigan, with the worst window late Thursday into Thursday night. Then Friday through the weekend clears out — noticeably cooler and much less humid.
Looking ahead on the concert calendar, the Jelly Roll - The Little Ass Shed Tour comes to Acrisure Amphitheater on June 13. Keep an eye on the forecast as Saturday approaches, and grab a Jelly Roll t-shirt for the show.
Stay with the Detroit weather forecast through this active stretch — the afternoon storm timing could shift with each update.
