Detroit is heading into Wednesday partly sunny with a high near 76°F — but don’t let the calm morning fool you. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for all of metro Detroit south of M-59 beginning this evening, with widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms capable of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes. Get outdoor tasks done before 3 PM ET, pack a compact travel umbrella, and plan for a rough night.

Today’s Setup

Morning and midday offer the best window. Southwest winds at 8 to 12 mph and partly sunny skies make for a pleasant mid-June stretch along the riverfront or Belle Isle. Rain showers begin creeping in around 3 to 5 PM ET, and from there the atmosphere gets volatile fast. A powerful, compact low-pressure system will track directly across Southeast Michigan, bringing the core of widespread thunderstorms roughly between 7 PM and 1 AM ET.

Severe Weather and Flood Risk Tonight

This is a storm to take seriously. The National Weather Service is forecasting 1 to 2 inches of rainfall tonight, and some storms may produce rates well above that in short bursts. South winds will gust to 32 mph overnight. Downriver communities, Midtown neighborhoods, and anywhere with older storm infrastructure face the highest localized flood risk. Move anything valuable out of the basement now, clear your drains, and consider that gutter guards are one of the best long-term defenses against this kind of rainfall event. A packable rain jacket in your bag is smart even if you’re planning a short outing.

If You Have Plans Tonight

Several events are on the books in Detroit today, and the timing matters. The MGK: Lost Americana Tour plays Acrisure Amphitheater tonight — an outdoor venue that lands directly in the prime storm window. Watch venue communications closely before heading out. Dance Gavin Dance at The Fillmore Detroit is an indoor show and a much safer call weather-wise. Still looking for last-minute tickets? Get tickets on SeatGeek or Find tickets on StubHub.

Weekend Tigers Baseball at Comerica Park

Better days are ahead. The Detroit Tigers host the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park on Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 — and both days look far more cooperative than tonight. Temperatures will stay slightly below normal, which actually makes for great ballpark weather. Grab a Detroit Tigers jersey or a Detroit Tigers fitted cap and get out to the corner of Michigan and Trumbull.

Tonight’s Dinner Call

Stay in, stay dry, and eat well. Load up a programmable slow cooker in the morning with chili, beef stew, or a big pot of soup — it’ll be ready right when the storms peak. An enameled cast iron Dutch oven works just as well on the stovetop if you prefer to stir things along. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

  • Thursday, June 18: Partly sunny, high near 72°F. West wind gusts up to 35 mph and a 30% chance of lingering showers before 4 PM ET. Santana & The Doobie Brothers play Pine Knob Music Theatre Thursday night — keep an eye on updated timing.
  • Friday and beyond: Conditions improve, temperatures remain slightly below normal. Solid setup for the Tigers series and the weekend concert slate.

Stay weather-aware tonight and check the full Detroit weather forecast for updates as storms approach.
