Houston kicks off meteorological summer on Monday, June 1 with a high near 91°F and a heat index that could reach 102°F — get your outdoor errands done before noon and have a plan if afternoon storms develop.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says onshore Gulf flow is pumping moisture levels near the 90th percentile, making today feel every bit of early June. Partly sunny skies will dominate the morning across Memorial Park, the Heights, and Pearland, but humidity will feel oppressive well before afternoon. Southeast winds of 0 to 5 mph offer little natural relief — this is Houston in June, after all.

Best Window To Be Outside

Before noon CT is your window. Morning walkers on the Bayou Greenways and golfers at Memorial Park Golf Course should aim for 7–9 AM. After that, isolated to scattered storms are possible along the sea breeze — the NWS notes any storm that fires could drop a quick, heavy downpour in a hurry. Bring a cooling neck towel and keep an insulated tumbler 30oz full of ice water close by if you’re pushing past that window.

Rain and Heat Risk

A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms exists after noon CT, with the best chances falling between 12 PM and 7 PM. Flash flooding near low-lying bayous is always possible when storms repeat over the same area — a lesson Houston knows well. If you hear thunder, head inside. Heat is today’s bigger story: the National Weather Service urges outdoor workers to take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, wear light and loose clothing, and NEVER leave kids or pets in a parked car. If the pavement is too hot for the palm of your hand, it is too hot for your dog’s paws.

Astros at Daikin Park — This Week

The Houston Astros host the Pittsburgh Pirates at Daikin Park on Wednesday, June 3 and Thursday, June 4. Evening game-time temps will be steamy with storm chances increasing as the week goes on — pack a Houston Astros fitted cap for shade and rep the home team in a Houston Astros jersey. Get tickets on SeatGeek before the series fills up.

Prefer an indoor show? Yellowcard plays 713 Music Hall on June 4 — Find tickets on StubHub and snag a Yellowcard t-shirt for the night. Jeff Dunham’s Artificial Intelligence show hits the Hobby Center on June 5. You’ll be grateful for the AC after the commute.

Too Hot to Cook?

Skip the stove tonight. A cold Thai noodle salad or smoothie bowls are perfect for a 91°F evening. A high-powered blender makes quick work of frozen fruit smoothie bowls, and an insulated tumbler 30oz keeps drinks cold all night long. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Storm chances jump to 40% on Tuesday afternoon, with the heat index still reaching near 101°F. The National Weather Service says shower and storm chances continue climbing toward the end of the work week. Stay current with the Houston weather forecast, check outdoor gear deals if you need to prep for a wet and sticky week, and consider the DARAN 288Wh Power Station for $90 as a smart storm-season backup for power outages.
