Here’s what’s happening: A cold front is pushing through Southeast Texas right now, and it’s bringing some serious wet weather with it. The National Weather Service expects the front to move through our area in stages. If you’re in the Piney Woods or Brazos Valley (think College Station direction), storms could fire up as early as 9-11 AM CT. If you’re closer to the I-10 corridor—that’s most of us from Downtown Houston through Katy and The Woodlands—expect the heaviest action between 1-4 PM CT. The storms will push offshore by evening, around 5-7 PM CT.
Here’s the important part: The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall, particularly across urban Houston. With moisture levels near 1.8-2.0 inches of precipitable water, some of these thunderstorms could dump a quarter to half-inch of rain quickly. Low-lying areas, poor drainage zones, and neighborhoods prone to pooling—I’m thinking Greens Bayou, Brays Bayou, and the East End—could see minor flooding. If you’re near a bayou or drainage area, keep an eye on rising water Saturday afternoon.
Astros fans heading to Daikin Park: Saturday’s game against the Cardinals will be dicey. Storms are most likely between 1-4 PM CT, so there’s a real chance of rain delays. Bring a poncho or rain jacket, and consider parking in a covered garage if you can. Sunday’s game looks much better—clearing skies and cooler temps (high near 71°F) with just a slight chance of morning showers.
Saturday night gets wild: Expect showers and thunderstorms to persist through the evening with gusts up to 30 mph and 1-2 inches of potential rainfall. If you’ve got outdoor furniture, trampolines, or grills, secure them now. A pop-up canopy tent with weights and bungee cord assortment are lifesavers in wind like this. If you’re expecting to do any yard work this weekend, a trampoline anchor kit will keep things in place.
Sunday and beyond: The front clears out by Sunday morning, leaving us with partly sunny skies, cooler temps in the low 70s, and northeast winds still gusting to 30 mph. It’ll be a much nicer day for outdoor activities, though still breezy. By early next week, we’re back to seasonal spring conditions.
