Houston weather today brings mostly cloudy skies with a high near 89°F and a 30% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, especially north of I-10, according to the National Weather Service.

Here’s what you need to know: The National Weather Service forecasters are tracking a strong mid-level weather pattern overhead that’s creating an environment favorable for thunderstorm development. Shear (wind changes with height) will exceed 50 knots, and moisture levels are running anomalously high—approaching 2.0 inches of precipitable water north of the loop. The main window for storms kicks in around 1 PM CT and continues through early evening. While the heaviest activity is expected north of I-10 (think The Woodlands, Spring, and areas toward Conroe), don’t be shocked if storms develop south of the freeway, including near downtown Houston and Daikin Park.

A few storms could produce hail and gusty winds, so if you’re heading to outdoor events today—like Rock The Country at the Austin County Fairgrounds tonight or catching up on yard work—keep one eye on the sky. The Weather Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk of excessive rainfall, primarily due to very high rain rates (2+ inches per hour possible), though most storms should move steadily without training or backbuilding.

For your Wednesday plans: If you’re golfing, get out early before 1 PM CT. Check out Best Golf Rangefinders Under $300 to sharpen your game. Fishing should be decent early in the day—consider grabbing a Plano Double-Sided Tackle Box Just $14 with Free Shipping if you’re heading to the bays or bayous.

For the Rockets playoff game on Friday, May 1st (West Conference Quarterfinals: Lakers at Rockets Rd 1 Hm Gm 3), conditions will be much cooler and breezy after a strong cold front pushes through Friday morning. Perfect weather for tailgating at Toyota Center—grab some Official team gear on Fanatics and a portable propane grill to fire up pre-game burgers.

Tonight’s dinner idea: Perfect grilling weather while it lasts—fire up the grill for steaks or grilled chicken with corn on the cob before the storms arrive. Grab an instant-read meat thermometer and a grill brush and scraper set to keep your grates clean. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon Fresh and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Looking ahead: Wednesday night brings a slight chance of storms before 10 PM CT (20% chance), then Thursday stays mostly cloudy with another 28% chance of afternoon storms. Friday’s strong cold front will bring heavier rain and storms in the morning, followed by much cooler, breezy conditions—a dramatic shift from today’s humidity. By Saturday, expect breezy winds over the Gulf and bays.

Stay weather-aware, and don’t hesitate to move indoor activities if storms develop this afternoon.
