Spring Heat Wave Coming: Grab Your Umbrella for Scattered Showers This Week

Today: Warm, Breezy, and Mostly Dry

This afternoon we’re looking at a pleasant 77 degrees with southwest winds around 21 mph—a bit gusty, so secure any outdoor furniture or grills you’ve got set up. There’s only a 17% chance of rain showers, so if you’re planning to grab lunch outside or take a walk in Central Park, you should be fine. Tonight cools to around 61 with mostly clear skies, making it a great evening for opening those windows and airing out the apartment.

The Big Picture: Near-Record Heat Tuesday Through Thursday

Here’s where things get interesting. Starting Tuesday, we’re entering what the National Weather Service is calling a near-record heat wave. We’re talking mid-to-upper 80s across Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens—with some areas possibly touching 90 degrees on Wednesday, our warmest day of the week. If you work outdoors or commute via the subway, stay hydrated and take breaks in air conditioning when you can.

But here’s the catch: don’t pack away that umbrella just yet.

Daily Showers All Week—But Don’t Panic

While we’re enjoying this unseasonable warmth, a series of weak weather systems will pass north of us, bringing daily chances for scattered showers Tuesday through Thursday. The good news? Chances remain low on Tuesday (around 20%), with better odds on Wednesday and Thursday. Most of these will be brief and scattered—not washouts.

Wednesday looks like our best shot for an isolated thunderstorm, especially during the afternoon when daytime heating peaks. If you’re planning outdoor activities like grilling, golfing, or catching a Yankees game, Tuesday is your safest bet. Wednesday and Thursday? Keep a compact umbrella handy and check the radar before heading out.

If you’re doing yard work or thinking about spring cleanup, get your mowing and gutter maintenance done today or Tuesday morning. A quality rain jacket will be your best friend mid-week, and waterproof boots are smart if you’re planning to be outside for extended periods.

Looking Ahead

This warm, showery pattern continues through Friday before a strong cold front arrives Sunday, bringing temperatures back down to normal. So enjoy the warmth while it lasts—but keep those rain-ready essentials within arm’s reach.

Bottom line: Beautiful today and tomorrow, warm and scattered showers Wednesday-Thursday, then a cooldown heading into next week. Classic spring in New York!
