Philadelphia is kicking off Wednesday under gray, soggy skies — showers and thunderstorms are likely through 2 PM ET, with a high near 82°F. Grab a compact travel umbrella before you head out and plan any outdoor errands for after lunch if you can swing it.

Today’s Setup

A stalled boundary parked just south of the area is the main troublemaker today. The National Weather Service says the heaviest activity will stay concentrated south of I-78 — think South Philly, Delaware County, and the southern suburbs — with scattered showers and possible thunderstorms running from about 7 AM through 10 AM ET. A chance of storms lingers through roughly 2 PM ET as an incoming cold front tries to sweep through from the northwest. After that, drier air moves in behind the front. Tonight finishes mostly cloudy with only an 8% chance of rain and a comfortable low around 63°F.

Best Window to Be Outside

Your opening comes mid-afternoon, and Thursday is the clear standout of the week — mostly sunny, high near 78°F, with a fresh north breeze of 5 to 15 mph. Hit the Schuylkill River Trail, grab lunch on the Parkway, or finally get that walk around Fairmount Park in. It’s going to feel like a reward after today.

Storm Risk

The more serious severe weather threat today is well southeast of the city. The Storm Prediction Center’s Slight Risk area for damaging wind gusts clips the Eastern Shore and southern Delaware — not Philadelphia proper. NWS forecasters at Mount Holly note that higher instability and wind shear remain displaced to our south and west. That said, keep an eye on radar this morning — any thunderstorm can produce lightning and gusty winds, especially near the Delaware waterfront or exposed areas like the stadiums complex in South Philly.

What to Wear or Bring

Go breathable on top — it’ll feel warm and muggy near that 82°F peak — and keep a compact travel umbrella in your bag for the morning commute. Temps drop to a pleasant 63°F tonight, so a light jacket is plenty after dinner.

Weekend Events: Roots Picnic & Springsteen

Here’s the good news for event-goers: conditions improve dramatically heading into the holiday weekend. The Roots Picnic at Belmont Plateau on Saturday, May 30 looks like it’s landing in a weather sweet spot. Grab your The Roots Picnic hat and a The Roots Picnic t-shirt, pack a picnic basket set for 4, and enjoy one of Philly’s best outdoor traditions. Get tickets on SeatGeek if you still need them.

Also on May 30, Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band bring the “Land of Hope & Dreams American Tour” to Xfinity Mobile Arena. Pick up a Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band t-shirt for the occasion and Find tickets on StubHub if you’re still hunting for seats.

Rainy Day Dinner

A slow, wet Wednesday is made for something bubbling on the stove all day. Toss a beef chili or hearty bean soup into a programmable slow cooker before you leave — it’ll be ready when you walk in the door. Or go stovetop with an enameled cast iron Dutch oven for a thick beef stew that’ll fill the whole house with great smells. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

  • Thursday, May 28: Mostly sunny, high near 78°F — get outside, it’s the best day of the week.
  • Thursday night: Mostly clear, low around 56°F. Open those windows.
  • Friday through the weekend: The National Weather Service is calling for continued drier, more seasonable conditions — great timing for Memorial Day weekend outdoor plans, from the Shore points down to Cape May to backyard gatherings across the region.
