Here’s what our National Weather Service forecasters are telling us: that moist air moving in from the northeast overnight will clear out quickly as drier air builds in from the Hill Country. You might see a few lingering light showers south of Highway 90 and over the Rio Grande Plains through mid-morning, but most of us north of the city—from the North Star Mall corridor up toward the military bases at Lackland and Fort Sam Houston—should see conditions improve significantly by 10 AM CT.
This is actually great news for your Sunday plans. If you’re thinking about a stroll along the River Walk or catching some fresh air at Government Canyon State Natural Area, aim for late morning or afternoon when that drier air has fully moved in. Just keep a compact travel umbrella handy in your car through 10 AM CT, just in case.
For the Spurs fans heading to Frost Bank Center tonight for the playoff game against Portland (tip-off at 7 PM CT), you’ll have mostly cloudy conditions with light winds—perfect weather for tailgating before the game. Bring a light jacket; it’ll be around 65°F by game time.
Now, here’s the heads-up: this dry window is temporary. Rain and thunderstorms will rebound back north Sunday evening and really dig in Monday. Our forecast models show a 76% chance of showers and thunderstorms Monday, with rain likely continuing into Tuesday across the eastern two-thirds of the area. This isn’t a flash flood situation—the Weather Prediction Center says we don’t have enough atmospheric instability to generate the heavy rain rates needed for that—but it will be a wet couple of days.
If you’ve been thinking about mowing the lawn or tackling outdoor projects, Sunday afternoon between 11 AM and 5 PM CT is your window. After that, plan on staying indoors Monday and Tuesday.
