Storms Return This Afternoon—Prepare for Strong to Severe Weather Today
Here’s the bottom line for Wednesday: Scattered storms will develop this afternoon and evening, with a risk for strong to severe weather in our northwestern counties. The National Weather Service is particularly concerned about large hail and damaging winds, so if you live north and west of the DFW metroplex, stay weather-aware through this evening.
Today’s Timeline
This morning should stay relatively quiet—any lingering storms from overnight will weaken as they move into more stable air. We might see a bit of light rain near daybreak in the northwestern areas, but don’t count on it.
The real action kicks off this afternoon as a shortwave disturbance moves across the Plains. Scattered storms will develop along the dryline to our west and move northeast starting in late afternoon. These storms could strengthen considerably, especially in our northwestern counties (think Wise, Jack, and Montague counties). While a tornado threat exists, forecasters say low-level wind patterns are less favorable for rotation today—but that doesn’t mean we’re in the clear, so keep an eye on the sky.
Expect temperatures to climb to around 81°F with mostly cloudy skies and south winds 10-15 mph, gusting to 25 mph. Rainfall amounts should stay modest (a tenth to quarter inch), but any storm that develops could produce heavier localized rain.
What to Do Today
Skip outdoor projects. Mowing, grilling, and yard work should wait until Thursday. If you’re planning to fish or golf, consider an indoor alternative or wait until tomorrow when conditions improve dramatically.
Travel carefully. If you’re heading to DFW Airport or driving through North Texas this afternoon, allow extra time and stay alert. Severe storms can produce sudden downpours and reduce visibility.
Be prepared. Keep a compact travel umbrella and a packable rain jacket handy—you might need them at a moment’s notice. If you’re out and about when storms develop, don’t hesitate to seek shelter.
Tonight & Thursday: A Break in the Action
After tonight’s storms clear, we’ll see improving conditions. Thursday looks fantastic—mostly sunny, high near 87°F, and only a 7% chance of rain. That’s your day to catch up on outdoor plans!
A Perfect Rainy Day Dinner
With storms on the menu this afternoon, why not plan a comfort-food dinner? A programmable slow cooker makes it easy to start a hearty beef stew or chili this morning and have it ready by dinner time. Or go traditional with a Dutch oven pot of soup simmering on the stove—nothing beats the aroma of home-cooked comfort food while storms roll through.
Looking Ahead
Friday looks great, but a strong cold front moves in Saturday with another round of scattered showers and storms. Much cooler air follows, lingering into early next week before warming returns. For now, stay weather-aware today, and we’ll have plenty of sunshine to make up for it Thursday.
Stay safe out there, neighbors!
