Tampa–St. Petersburg wakes up to another hot, humid Tuesday with the high near 92°F and a heat index that could touch 100°F by afternoon — the kind of day that drains you before you even break a sweat. Plan your outdoor time early and have a storm plan ready before tonight.

Today’s Setup

The National Weather Service says low clouds streaming off the Gulf are eroding quickly this morning as the sun gains strength. Expect partly sunny skies and a light WNW breeze of 5 to 8 mph — not much cooling when the air is this saturated. The silver lining for the coast: NWS Tampa Bay forecasters say most afternoon thunderstorm activity will set up over the eastern Florida peninsula, leaving Clearwater, St. Pete, and the bayshore relatively warm and dry. Rain chance is just 20% today.

Best Window To Be Outside

Your sweet spot is before noon. Knock out yardwork, a round at Innisbrook, or a morning walk along the Pinellas Trail while temperatures are still in the mid-to-upper 80s. If you’re headed to Clearwater Beach, pack your quick dry swim trunks or women’s swimsuit and an insulated tumbler 30oz loaded with something cold. By 2 PM ET the heat index is near 100 — shade is mandatory.

Rain and Storm Risk

Tonight the story changes fast. A frontal boundary pushing south raises the overnight storm chance to 50%, with the low around 74°F. Wednesday ramps up further: 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms, and the National Weather Service specifically warns the strongest storms are capable of damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning. Wednesday’s high tops near 84°F before dropping to around 80°F in the afternoon as the front sweeps through. Rainfall totals of a quarter to half an inch are possible.

No excessive rainfall risk for Tampa in today’s WPC outlook, but this is still the lightning capital of the U.S. — when Wednesday storms fire, get off Tampa Bay, clear the beaches, and move away from open spaces. With storms on the way, it’s smart to prep: the DARAN 288Wh Power Station is just $90 for Prime Members — solid insurance when lightning takes out the grid.

Events This Week

Tonight’s Tampa Bay Rays vs. Detroit Tigers game at Tropicana Field is fully indoors, so rain is a non-issue. Rep the home team in a Tampa Bay Rays jersey or Tampa Bay Rays fitted capFind tickets on StubHub if you still need seats.

Also tonight: Young the Giant - Victory Garden Tour with Cold War Kids at Yuengling Center. Indoor venue, weather not a concern. Get tickets on SeatGeek for last-minute availability.

On Friday, June 5, Hank Williams Jr. plays MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre at the FL State Fairgrounds — an outdoor shed. Wednesday’s storm system should clear before then, but keep an eye on Thursday’s outlook. Grab a Hank Williams Jr. t-shirt and lock in your spot via Find tickets on StubHub.

Beat the Heat at Dinner

Skip the stove entirely tonight. Cold Thai noodle salad, a build-your-own wrap bar, or smoothie bowls are the move when the heat index hits triple digits. Your high-powered blender is the only appliance you need. Need ingredients? You can order groceries on Amazon and have everything for tonight’s dinner delivered to your door.

Next Few Days

Wednesday is the rough day — 70% storm coverage, heavy downpours, and gusty winds possible. Thursday should trend calmer as the front exits. Check the Tampa weather forecast for updates on the weekend, including England vs. New Zealand at Raymond James Stadium on June 6 and beach conditions heading into the weekend.
