Washington, DC is heading into a scorching Saturday with a high near 94°F and partly sunny skies — if you’re planning time at the National Mall or Georgetown Waterfront, go early and be back indoors before the afternoon peak. The National Weather Service warns heat indices could briefly touch 95°F between 3 and 6 PM ET, making this one of the most intense afternoons of the early summer so far.
Today’s Setup
A west wind of 5 to 12 mph with gusts near 22 mph will keep things moving but won’t cut the heat. NWS forecasters are tracking a cold front dropping southeast that could spark strong to severe thunderstorms across the northern suburbs — Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville — late this afternoon into the evening. The I-66/US-50 corridor is roughly the dividing line; south of there, the risk is lower. If you’re north of that line, keep a weather app open and be ready to head inside before 5 PM ET.
Best Window To Be Outside
Your best shot is early morning. Rock Creek Park and the C&O Canal towpath are gorgeous before 10 AM ET while temperatures are still in the mid-70s. Boaters on the upper Potomac: NWS has flagged Small Craft Advisory-level gusts from late morning through early evening — stay close to shore or skip the water today.
Heat and Fire Risk
Today’s combination of heat, dry air, and gusty west winds elevates fire conditions across the region. Make sure your home is ready: keep a fire extinguisher home accessible in the kitchen, a fire blanket kitchen near the stove, and a fireproof document safe for passports and vital papers. Have your go bag emergency evacuation kit stocked and current. If smoke drifts in on the west wind, an N95 respirator mask smoke is worth having on hand.
Weekend Events
Tonight at The Anthem on The Wharf, Martin Garrix brings his Americas Tour to DC. It’s indoors — no heat problem — but the walk from Metro in 94°F is real. Get tickets on SeatGeek if you’re still on the fence.
