Washington, DC weather today brings widespread frost through mid-morning, then sunny skies with a high near 62°F—a chilly spring day that calls for layers and planning.

If you’ve got tender plants in your garden around the National Mall or Georgetown neighborhoods, get them covered now. The National Weather Service confirms we’re about 10 days past the median date for our last spring freeze, and with the warm early spring we’ve had, plants are already ahead of schedule. That frost could do real damage to anything that’s already sprouted. A pair of touchscreen winter gloves will keep your hands warm while you’re protecting your garden, and you’ll still be able to check your phone.

Gameday at Nationals Park looks favorable. If you’re heading to the ballpark for tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves, expect mostly clear skies and calm winds (3 to 7 mph from the southeast). It’ll be cool—bring a fleece-lined beanie and maybe a heated vest if you’re sensitive to the cold. The 62-degree high means the stadium will feel crisp, especially once the sun sets around 7:45 PM. No rain in the forecast for the game itself, so your plans are solid.

Tuesday night clouds roll in, and by Wednesday morning, rain showers become likely. The National Weather Service expects precipitation to kick in after 7 AM Wednesday, with a 60% chance of showers throughout the day. Rainfall amounts should stay modest—between a tenth and a quarter inch—but bring an umbrella for your commute along the Potomac waterfront or if you’re walking the National Mall. Wednesday’s high climbs to 72°F, so it’ll feel milder even with the wet weather.

The rain should clear out by Wednesday evening, leaving us with another chilly night (low around 53°F). If you’re planning outdoor activities for the rest of the Nationals series (games Wednesday and Thursday), Wednesday looks wet, but Thursday should improve.

Tonight’s the perfect night for comfort food. With frost outside and cool temperatures all day, warm up with a hearty baked pasta, pot roast, or homemade mac and cheese. An electric kettle will have hot water ready in minutes for hot chocolate afterward. Did you know you can order groceries on Amazon? Get everything you need for tonight’s dinner delivered straight to your door.

Looking ahead: Temperatures warm into the upper 60s and low 70s later this week, with additional rain chances possible by the weekend. Keep an eye on conditions if you’re planning outdoor activities around the Tidal Basin or Rock Creek Park—spring weather in DC can shift fast.

Stay warm out there, neighbors.
