Denver weather today brings mostly sunny skies and a high near 85°F, but don’t let the pleasant temperatures fool you—critical fire weather conditions are in effect across the metro and foothills, with dangerous wind gusts expected through midnight.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning beginning at 10 AM MT through midnight tonight due to enhanced downslope winds, very low humidity, and rapid warming. Southwest winds will gust between 30–45 mph, with the strongest gusts arriving during afternoon hours (roughly 1–5 PM MT). If you live in neighborhoods near the foothills—like Littleton, Morrison, or the western edges of Boulder—take extra precautions: secure any loose outdoor items, avoid burning debris, and keep your garden hose accessible.

For anyone heading to Coors Field to catch the Colorado Rockies vs. San Diego Padres game this evening, plan for breezy conditions in the stands. Bring a light jacket for the cool-down after sunset, and hold onto your hat—those 35 mph gusts won’t be kind to loose caps.

If you’re planning outdoor activities around Washington Park or Cherry Creek, now is not the time for yard work or grilling. Wait until Thursday or this weekend when winds ease significantly. Thursday will be cooler (high near 65°F) and much calmer, making it ideal for spring cleanup and outdoor projects.

Allergy sufferers should note that gusty winds will stir up pollen and dust throughout the day. Consider wearing a pollen count face mask if you’re spending time outdoors, and keep allergy relief nasal spray handy. When you get home, running a HEPA air purifier will help clear your indoor air of the day’s windblown particles.

Thursday morning will see additional mountain wave amplification above 8,500 feet in the foothills, bringing another round of strong winds early on before conditions improve by afternoon. By Friday and the weekend, a pattern change brings cooler, unsettled weather—a welcome relief from this dry stretch.

Looking ahead to the weekend: the Colorado Mammoth host the San Diego Seals in their first-round playoff game on April 25 at Ball Arena, followed by the Nuggets’ Western Conference quarterfinal matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 27. Both games should see much more pleasant conditions than today’s blustery setup.

For dinner tonight, consider a hearty pasta or stir-fry that doesn’t require much outdoor grilling time. Did you know you can order groceries on Amazon? Get everything you need for tonight’s dinner delivered straight to your door.

Fire Safety Reminder: If you see any signs of wildfire activity, call 911 immediately. Check your home’s defensible space—clear leaves and needles from gutters, trim tree branches, and remove dead vegetation within 30 feet of your house.
